The Best VR Games I’ve Played

I’ve always had a fascination with VR and I believe that this new form of video games has an incredible amount of potential. Having owned an Oculus Quest 2 (or is it a Meta Quest 2 now?) for a little over a year, I thought it would be worth taking a look at some of the best VR games I’ve played. However, I should warn you that I’m no expert when it comes to VR games, I’m still missing many essential games such as Half-Life: Alyx and Beat Saber but I still think my current opinion is worth sharing.

The first two games I want to touch on are Budget Cuts and Budget Cuts 2. I’ve already touched on Budget Cuts before when I spoke about stealth video games but I have never discussed its sequel. The Budget Cuts games see you sneaking through its various levels, avoiding enemies, sometimes dispatching them with your limited arsenal and figuring out how to progress. While initially frustrating as I missed several basic mechanics, I’ve grown to really admire these two games for their humour, surprisingly excellent movement and open level design.

Another VR game that I found to be surprisingly brilliant is I Expect You To Die. Playing a secret agent, you find yourself ending up in various hideouts and lairs of the villainous Dr. Zor where you must figure out how to either escape or retrieve important documents while avoiding various traps and weaponry. I Expect You To Die, for the most part, allows you to take your time, observing the various tools you have at your disposal and formulating a solution to your current predicament. This is supplemented by wonderful voice acting, pleasant visuals and a great sense of humour. I’ve yet to play the sequel but I’m looking forward to it.

As a fan of Rick and Morty and platformers, I was very eager to try Trover Saves The Universe and the game did not disappoint. Playing a Chairorpian, aliens who are always seated, you control Trover from your seat as you travel the universe in order to save your dogs. The 3D platformer gameplay is quite satisfying, albeit a little simple, the visuals are wonderfully colourful and cartoony and the humour is generally excellent although certain jokes don’t quite land either due to excessive vulgarity or going on too long. Regardless, Trover Saves The Universe has been one of the most enjoyable VR games I’ve played so far.

I didn’t know much about A Fisherman’s Tale when I began to play it but I was quickly entranced by how unbelievably unique the game is. Basically, you control a small wooden fisherman in a model lighthouse but your actions are replicated by both a larger wooden fisherman outside of your model lighthouse and by a smaller wooden fisherman in a little model lighthouse. This leads to some incredibly unique puzzles that feature really interesting solutions. I’ll honestly never forget looking up and seeing numerous model lighthouses stretch off into the distance and these kind of sights are part of the potential that VR has.

Finally, I’d like to discuss Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. While not necessary to play in VR, as someone who has played the game in both standard and VR modes, I find VR mode to be a much more satisfying experience. Basically, the game requires two players, someone who is in the room with the bomb while the other person has a stack of instructions on how to defuse the bomb. The game quickly becomes about communication with the person defusing the bomb having to describe the bomb and modules while the expert has to explain clearly and concisely how to deal with each module on the bomb. It’s a surprisingly addictive game which steadily ramps up in difficulty. I only managed to make it to the “Challenging” levels before getting stuck on the “Extreme” levels. Regardless, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is fantastic and strongly recommended.

Let me know your thoughts on the best VR games I’ve played, if you’ve played any of them, what you thought about them if you have played them, what other great VR games you’ve played, what you think about VR in general and any additional information you might have on the topic.
