Over a year ago, I spoke about a rumour that Horizon Zero Dawn, a first-party game from Sony, was coming to PC. After I wrote that article, Sony themselves confirmed the rumour and released Horizon Zero Dawn for PC on the 7th of August, 2020 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store with a release on GOG.com on November 24th. Horizon Zero Dawn seemed to perform strongly on PC but it was still unknown if and how Sony would proceed. However, a recent interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan not only confirmed that a “whole slate” of Sony games were making their way to PC but that Days Gone, a game released exclusively for the PS4 in 2019, is being released on PC in spring. With this news, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the Sony games that I’d love to see released on PC in the future.
First off, there is a particular game that I and many other PC gamers desire Sony to port more than any other, even mentioning it in my article last year. As I’m sure you’re well aware of, I’m a big fan of the Dark Souls series and, having played through each entry multiple times, I’m eager to find other games that evoke the same feelings as when I play Dark Souls. Understandably, I have a strong desire to play Bloodborne, an action RPG directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the Dark Souls series, but have been restricted by the fact that Bloodborne is a PS4 exclusive. People have told me “just buy a PS4 to play it” but I cannot justify buying a €300 console to play a single game. Besides that, I’m also eager to play the newly released Demon’s Souls remake that was released on PS5 recently. The game was originally announced for both PS5 and PC but Sony very quickly stated that the inclusion of the phrase “Also available on PC” was a mistake. While frustrating, I do believe that Demon’s Souls will be released on PC someday and that Sony were merely trying to drum up hype for the release of the PS5.
While I suspect that this upcoming “slate” of Sony titles for PC will be predominantly PS4-centric, there are plenty of older Sony franchises that I’d love to see ported someday. Some other Sony games that I’d love to see eventually released for PC would be their “Jak and Daxter” and “Ratchet & Clank” series’. I have many fond memories of playing these games on the PS2 when I was much younger and I’d be eager to get the opportunity to reexperience them. 3D platformers are having a comeback and I think rereleasing the collections containing the PS2 titles would be a smart move to cash in on the nostalgia that has made the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon releases so successful.
Back in the day, I can remember renting Shadow of the Colossus for my PS2 and I had an oddly enjoyable time despite many of the game’s themes being lost on me. However, I never ended up completing the game for some unknown reason and it continues to be something that I regret. While a release of the PS4 remake for PC would be great, I’d also be interested in seeing a release of Ico and The Last Guardian, other games from Fumito Ueda, the director of Shadow of the Colossus, for PC as well.
Going back to the PS1 era, another game that I have very fond memories of was Ape Escape. A 3D platformer game that saw the main character capture evil monkeys that were sent throughout time to change history, I remember having a lot of fun exploring the worlds, locating and capturing monkeys and it ended up being one of the few games I ended up completing as a child. Interestingly, I never ended up playing the sequels but a collected rerelease would be a great opportunity to catch up on the franchise as well as replay the first game.
Finally, as a massive fan of JRPGs, I would love to see Sony rerelease the “Wild Arms” games for PC. Set in a fantasy world called Filgaia with elements of Westerns and Steampunk, the series features a turn-based combat system which I’m a fan of and a pleasant anime aesthetic. While the series has remained pretty dormant with only a few mobile games released since 2007, I would love to get the opportunity to try these games in the future.
Looking back over this article, I think the only games that I’ve listed that even have a chance of seeing a PC release in the near future are Bloodborne, the Demon’s Souls remake and perhaps the Shadow of the Colossus remake and The Last Guardian. Nonetheless, I can still hope that some of the other games that I’ve mentioned see a PC release someday and I remain cautiously optimistic now that Sony have confirmed that several of their games are making their way to PC. Let me know your thoughts on more Sony games coming to PC, your thoughts on the Sony games that I’d love to see on PC, other games that you would like to see Sony release for PC and any additional information you might have on this topic.
