Now that 2020 is wrapping up, I thought it might be nice to discuss some of the video games that I’m excited to play in 2021. I’m going to divide this article into three sections with the first discussing new games being released in 2021, the second discussing rereleases that I’m looking forward to and a third section discussing potential releases that I think could happen.
New Games
Easily one of my most anticipated games in 2021 is Overwatch 2. As someone who regularly plays Overwatch, I am very excited about all of the new additions to the game such as the PvP mode Push, new heroes, PvE missions that explore the story of Overwatch, graphics and UI overhaul and more! Even more exciting is that all content not related to PvE will be made available for free for owners of Overwatch!
If you are a regular reader, you will undoubtedly be familiar with my love for the Dark Souls series. Therefore, you will not be surprised to hear about my excitement for Hidetaka Miyazaki’s new game, Elden Ring. We unfortunately have very little information about the game at the moment but we do know that it is an action roleplaying game that will feature more open world design than Dark Souls. What is also quite noteworthy is the involvement of A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R. R. Martin who is responsible for creating much of the lore for the game.
I’d also like to mention the upcoming release of Psychonauts 2, the sequel to the cult classic Psychonauts and VR game Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. Psychonauts 2 will return to the 3D platformer gameplay of the original game with legendary game designer Tim Schafer returning to direct the game and will delve more into the organisation of the Psychonauts and Raz’s relationship with Lili.
Rereleases
I have greatly enjoyed playing Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 on PC and I was overjoyed to hear the recent news that the Yakuza Remastered Collection and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will be released on PC. Considering it had been more than a year and a half since Yakuza Kiwami 2 was released on PC, I was concerned that we might not be able to finish Kiryu Kazuma’s story. The Yakuza Remastered Collection compiles Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 while Yakuza 6 acts as the conclusive game to Kiryu’s saga.
I am also looking forward to trying SaGa Frontier Remastered when it gets released next year. While I have spoken about my concerns due to Square Enix’s history with remastering their games, I have heard an enormous amount of positivity surrounding the title and I can’t wait to get the chance to form my own opinion on the game.
Potential Releases
With the upcoming release of Persona 5 Strikers on PC, it would only make sense to release Persona 5 Royal on the platform. While nothing has been confirmed yet, Sega have repeatedly spoken about their desire to see more Atlus games released on PC. Given these two facts, I would be very surprised if we don’t see Persona 5 Royal before the end of next year.
I would also love to see a release of Bloodborne for PC as well. Sony have stated that they are interested in releasing more of their games for PC and given how popular the Dark Souls series is on the platform, a rerelease of Bloodborne should be a no brainer. A PC release would also give the chance for several technical issues surrounding Bloodborne such as frame-pacing and loading times to be fixed, potentially making Bloodborne on PC the definitive way to play the game.
2021 looks to be an exciting year for gaming, not only because of all the games I have mentioned but also because of several upcoming game anniversaries as well. Let me know what video games you are most excited to play in 2021, your thoughts on the games I’ve mentioned, other games you’d like to see rereleased and any other opinion you’d like to share.
