Discussing The Exciting But Not Straightforward Nvidia Games Leaks

I was perusing some gaming websites, in particular PC Gamer, and I came across a news story that momentarily got me incredibly excited. It turned out that a developer named Ighor July managed to find a complete list of games within the GeForce Now database which included some games that were recently announced and, much more interestingly, numerous games that have never been announced! The sheer number of games that were potentially leaked is unbelievable and near unprecedented. However, several details have since surfaced that have both confirmed the validity of these leaks as well as how some of these games may not actually be in development. Therefore, I thought it worth discussing the exciting but not straightforward Nvidia games leaks.

First, I should give some background on these leaks. GeForce Now is a cloud gaming service run by Nvidia allowing users to play a variety of games for a subscription as well as some games you own under a “bring your own games” system. According to Ighor’s own blog post on Medium, he accessed the console.log when you download GeForce Now, found app configurations and used them to fetch “the list of all of the games from GFN servers”. This resulted in a list of over 18,000 games which included a lot of game development applications but, more importantly for this article, also included numerous games that haven’t been announced yet.

For those who may continue to question the validity of these leaks, Nvidia made the interesting decision to confirm that the list accessed by Ighor is genuine although they added that the game list had “both released and/or speculative titles, used only for internal tracking and testing. Inclusion on the list is neither confirmation nor an announcement of any game.” Additionally, the only developer that I’m aware of to have denied something on this list is 343 Industries who responded to the inclusion of Halo 5: Guardians with the statement that “Maybe this was for H5: Forge but I can confirm there are no plans to bring H5 to PC“.

This has led to an interesting situation where most people believe that some of the games leaked are genuine but are unsure which games are real, which are speculative and what the ratio of real to speculative is. Nonetheless, I think it’s worth looking at some of the games listed and my thoughts. For a comprehensive list of all the games leaked, a reddit user named -LastGrail- has compiled a definitive list which you can check out. One of the more notable leaks was God of War (2018) which was specifically listed for Steam. Speaking of Sony, other Sony games that were listed were Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Ratchet and Clank, Ghost of Tsushima amongst others. While I’m a bit disappointed that Bloodborne isn’t listed there, I’ve made my desire for a PC port of it evident in the past, the inclusion of Demon’s Souls is quite exciting for me, as a fan of the Souls series, and I’ll be curious to see which, if any, turn out to be true.

Perhaps the most shocking title to me personally was when I looked at the Square Enix titles. I saw some pretty exciting remasters of Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy Tactics, a listing of both the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI which I feel more ambivalent about but the thing that caught my eye was Final Fantasy IX Remake. As some of you might be aware, Final Fantasy IX is not only my favourite Final Fantasy game but also my favourite video game of all time! Therefore, the idea of a remake is both exciting and terrifying to me. On one hand, I would love to see the world of Gaia rendered in high-quality modern graphics with voice-acting and possible new content while on the other hand, I’d be scared that they’d ruin the combat system, strip away side-content and make radical, potentially negative, changes to the story. Of course, I have my own scepticism that the project even exists in the first place. With Square Enix busy working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake games, Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI, I have a hard time imagining that they have the resources to also be developing a remake of Final Fantasy IX.

Besides that, other interesting games listed include Gears 6, a new Bioshock game, Shin Megami Tensei V, Catherine: Full Body, Kingdom Hearts IV as well as several RTX remasters for Mirror’s Edge, Batman: Arkham Knight and Bioshock. Something that’s worth noting though is that while GeForce Now is a PC gaming service, that’s no guarantee that all of these games would be going to PC. A lot of these games could potentially have PC builds that are used for playtesting but are being developed specifically for another platform.

A Final Fantasy IX Remake is interesting but is not only unlikely but quite terrifying to me, a fan of the original game.

It may take a long time to determine if any of these leaks are true but, given that Nvidia admitted that the list is real, I have no doubt that at least some of the entries are real and that, to me, is very exciting. Let me know your thoughts on discussing the exciting but not straightforward Nvidia games leaks, if you believe any of the games listed here are genuine or if all of them are placeholders, which ones you are potentially excited for and any additional information you might have on the topic.
